Find the FTMO rule set that applies to your exact account stage — 1-Step or 2-Step, evaluation or Rewards Account — and see which rules trip traders up, straight from official FTMO and FTMO x OANDA pages.
FTMO Rule Scope Board
Source labels: FTMO x OANDA source General FTMO FAQ Needs direct FTMO confirmation
1-Step Challenge
Evaluation – single phase
Trip-up: the 10% max loss trails your end-of-day highs. It can only rise — a good week raises your breach level.
1-Step Rewards Account
Funded stage after 1-Step
Trip-up: the trailing max loss resets to 90% of starting capital only after a reward is withdrawn and a new Rewards Account is issued.
2-Step Challenge
Evaluation – phase 1 of 2
Trip-up: a trading day only counts if you open at least one position that day (00:00–23:59 CE(S)T). In FTMO x OANDA’s example, a position opened Jan 12 and closed Jan 14 counts as one trading day, not three.
2-Step Verification
Evaluation – phase 2 of 2
Trip-up: the profit target halves to 5%, but both loss limits stay exactly where they were in phase 1.
2-Step Rewards Account
Funded stage after 2-Step
Trip-up: on Standard accounts the funded stage adds the news window your evaluation never had. Swing accounts are exempt per FTMO’s FAQ.
Cards are shorthand. Percentages are of Initial Simulated Capital. Loss limits are equity limits (balance + open P/L ± swaps − commissions), recalculated daily at 00:00 CE(S)T where noted. Rows labeled General FTMO FAQ are not directly confirmed for FTMO x OANDA accounts. Full definitions, applicability quotes, and worked examples are in the evidence table and detail sections below.
Rows To Inspect First
The 10% limit follows your highest end-of-day balance and never comes back down.
FTMO x OANDA
One outsized day can stall a pass or reward until your best day is 50% or less of positive-days profit.
FTMO x OANDA
The 90% max-loss floor stays static through Challenge, Verification, and Rewards Account.
FTMO x OANDA
Funded Standard accounts face the 2-minute news window. Swing and evaluation treatment differs.
General FTMO FAQ

Evidence Table
| Rule area | FTMO 1-Step | FTMO 2-Step + evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Profit Target | 10% in the FTMO Challenge. No Profit Target on the later FTMO Rewards Account. | 10% in the FTMO Challenge and 5% in Verification. None on the Rewards Account. |
| Maximum Daily Loss | 3% of Initial Simulated Capital. Equity limit recalculated daily at 00:00 CE(S)T from that day’s opening balance. Applies to Challenge and Rewards Account. | 5% of Initial Simulated Capital, same daily recalculation. Applies to Challenge, Verification, and Rewards Account. |
| Maximum Loss | 10% of Initial Simulated Capital as an end-of-day trailing limit. It can only increase, and fully resets to 90% of Initial Simulated Capital when a reward is withdrawn and a new Rewards Account is provided. | 10% of Initial Simulated Capital as a static limit across Challenge, Verification, and the Rewards Account. |
| Minimum Trading Days | Not listed for 1-Step on the checked source. Do not rely on its absence — verify directly with FTMO. | At least 4 Trading Days in both Challenge and Verification. A Trading Day is any 00:00:00–23:59:59 CE(S)T day with at least one position opened. None on the Rewards Account. |
| Best Day Rule | Best Day must be 50% or less of Positive Days’ Profit to pass the Challenge or qualify for a reward on the Rewards Account. Exceeding it is not a breach; you keep trading until the ratio drops. The source states: “This rule applies to the FTMO Challenge: 1-Step as well as the FTMO Rewards Account (1-Step).” | Not listed for 2-Step on the checked source. Do not rely on its absence — verify directly with FTMO. |
| News trading | FTMO’s FAQ: restrictions apply only to Standard accounts, only on a funded FTMO Account — never during the Evaluation Process. On targeted instruments, no opening or closing trades (including pending orders, stop losses, and take profits) from 2 minutes before to 2 minutes after listed releases. Swing accounts are exempt. General FTMO FAQ scope — confirm FTMO x OANDA applicability. | |
| Reward request timing | FTMO’s general FAQ: request a reward in Account MetriX on the 14th or any following day after the first placed trade, with all positions and pending orders closed. FTMO says it reviews and notifies within 1–2 business days, and typically sends within 1–2 business days after invoice approval. General FTMO FAQ scope — confirm FTMO x OANDA applicability. | |
| Reward split and methods | FTMO’s general FAQ states a 90% split for 1-Step and 80% for 2-Step (rising to 90% via Scaling Plan or Premium Programme), with rollover available on 2-Step only. These figures are General FTMO FAQ scope and are not confirmed for the FTMO x OANDA US product. Payment-method specifics are not summarized here for the same reason — verify current terms on your own account. | |
What The Loss Rules Mean
Maximum Daily Loss is an equity floor, not a balance floor. FTMO x OANDA calculates it from balance, open positions’ P/L, swaps, and commissions. If equity touches the floor, the rule is violated. The floor is recalculated every day at 00:00 CE(S)T from that day’s opening balance: 3% of starting capital for 1-Step, 5% for 2-Step.
Maximum Loss is a separate 10% floor. On 1-Step it trails: each midnight it recalculates from your highest prior end-of-day balance (or starting capital, if higher), and it never moves back down. On 2-Step it is static at 90% of starting capital for the whole journey. This is the single biggest structural difference between the two paths.
News Trading
Per FTMO’s FAQ, evaluation accounts trade news freely regardless of account type. Once funded, Standard accounts cannot open or close trades on targeted instruments inside the 2-minutes-before to 2-minutes-after window around listed releases — and pending orders, stop losses, and take profits that execute inside the window count too. Positions opened more than 2 minutes before the event may be held through it. Non-targeted instruments stay unrestricted. FTMO flags restricted events in its Economic Calendar.
This page does not cover how to trade around restricted events or how enforcement works. Check FTMO’s current calendar and your account type before trading near scheduled news.
Reward Withdrawal Rules
FTMO’s general FAQ says rewards can be requested in Account MetriX from the 14th day after your first placed trade, with all positions and pending orders closed. FTMO states it reviews the account and notifies the trader within 1–2 business days, and typically sends the reward within 1–2 business days after invoice approval. Treat that as FTMO’s stated process, not a guarantee that any specific reward will be approved or sent on a fixed date.
