Key takeaways
OLT Free Edition is the lowest verified tax-year-2025 federal-plus-one-state filing cost at $9.95 for the stated contractor business-income scenario. TaxSlayer Classic is $92.98, TurboTax Desktop Deluxe $105 including state e-file, and TaxAct Self-Employed Online $174.98. FreeTaxUSA’s $15.99 price has unresolved state/year availability; H&R Block’s complete cost is unknown. None of four specialist inquiries clears every credential, current prop-only acceptance and scope check. TradeLog and Koinly prepare specific reports, not the whole return. Your agreement and IRS rules decide tax character, not the platform or software.

Tax software and accountant shortlist for prop traders
For a U.S. individual whose agreement and facts support independent-contractor business income, OLT Free Edition is the cheapest verified complete filing route in this comparison. Its tax-year-2025 federal return and one state cost $9.95 at list fees. TaxSlayer Classic is the next priced choice for standard phone and email support; TurboTax Desktop Deluxe is the local-file alternative; TaxAct Self-Employed Online is the contractor-specific online route.
- OLT Free Edition for minimum verified filing spend, with email help and federal/state filing together.
- TaxSlayer Classic for full baseline forms without a mandatory self-employment support upgrade.
- TurboTax Desktop Deluxe for a desktop return and local backups, including the separate state e-file charge.
- TaxAct Self-Employed Online for a guided contractor product with optional human help.
No specialist accountant in this comparison passes every acceptance, credential and prop-only engagement check. Green Trader Tax, TraderTax, Trader Tax CPA and Trader’s Accounting are useful inquiries with specific unanswered questions, not numbered best-accountant endorsements. A known credential does not establish open capacity; a prop-tax page does not identify who signs your return.
FreeTaxUSA and H&R Block are also checked, not ranked. FreeTaxUSA’s price is supported but same-year state availability remains unresolved. H&R Block’s full required price could not be established. TradeLog and Koinly help prepare particular reports; neither replaces a complete federal-and-state return.
How we compared tax software and accountants for prop traders

This is a document-based comparison of twelve providers. We read named-plan pricing, supported forms, service terms, public availability, privacy/support policies, exact-domain reviews and owned-video evidence. Provider evidence was checked October 8, 2026; IRS and site checks were refreshed October 9, 2026. We did not create accounts, enter returns, buy licences, upload taxpayer documents, test customer service or measure tax savings. A form listing establishes capability, not the correct treatment of your agreement.
The price assumption is tax year 2025, one U.S. individual federal return and one fee-paying state return, business expenses, Form 1099-NEC input, Schedule C and Schedule SE, direct payment and e-file. It excludes entity returns, personal-trade imports, crypto reports, cleanup and optional expert/audit services. The reviewed 2025 price is not an announced 2026 price. A state without an individual income-tax return, a state e-file exemption or a nonresident return can change your bill and eligibility.
Complete list filing cost = federal list fee + one-state list fee + required form/plan upgrades + mandatory filing charges. We compute each documented qualifying plan, select the cheapest complete route per provider and order those totals. Equal totals share the cost position, with lower federal fee and then provider name used for display. Optional support, refund-funded payment and taxes owed are separate. An unknown required charge stays unknown; a deposit, starting quote or reporting licence is not a complete return price.
A specialist recommendation additionally needs a currently accepted prop-compensation return, a matched named preparer credential, and written federal/state scope. We do not lower that standard to fill an accountant list. Reviews do not override forms or engagement terms, and neither a trading instrument nor software brand determines federal tax character.
Prop trader tax software compared on complete filing cost
| Provider and plan | Payout form | Business forms | Federal fee | One-state fee | Complete list cost | Main catch |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| OLT Free Edition | 1099-NEC | C and SE | $0 | $9.95 | $9.95 | File state with federal |
| TaxSlayer Classic | 1099-NEC | C and SE | $44.99 | $47.99 | $92.98 | Expert advice costs more |
| TurboTax Desktop Deluxe | 1099-NEC | C and SE | $80 licence | Included prep | $105 | Add $25 state e-file |
| TaxAct Self-Employed Online | 1099-NEC | C and SE | $109.99 | $64.99 | $174.98 | Desktop total unresolved |
All four rows support federal and state e-file for the stated assumption. TurboTax’s included state preparation is not included state e-file, so its total includes $25. OLT, TaxSlayer and TaxAct have no additional mandatory upgrade or e-file charge in the verified baseline. Product-specific official sources and alternate-plan calculations appear in their blocks below. These are preparation costs, not effective tax rates.
| Conditional software | Supported price | Why not ranked |
|---|---|---|
| FreeTaxUSA Free Federal / Self-Employed | $15.99 advertised | Same-year state availability unresolved |
| H&R Block Self-Employed Online | Complete cost unknown | Federal/state required amounts unresolved |
Prop trader tax software compared on support and amendments
| Provider and plan | Extra state | Expert support | Amendments | Audit help | Tax year | Main limit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| OLT Free Edition | $9.95 | Email; Premium extra | Free if OLT original | Premium support only | 2025 | State-only limit |
| TaxSlayer Classic | $47.99 | Phone/email technical | $42 federal + state | Optional; fee unknown | 2025 | State amendments mailed |
| TurboTax Desktop Deluxe | 2025 total unverified | Product help; advice extra | Separate fee unverified | Q&A; defense extra | 2025 | Five federal e-files |
| TaxAct Self-Employed Online | $64.99 | Xpert Assist +$45 | Free creation; limits | Optional; fee unknown | 2025 | Backup return PDFs |
Technical support helps operate software. Return review, classification advice, amendment preparation and representation during an examination are different services. An audit-support label is not a promise that someone will represent you or pay additional tax. Confirm the signed scope and exclusions rather than treating every help button as an accountant engagement.
OLT tax software for the lowest verified payout-only filing cost
Email-based help is the trade-off behind OLT’s unusually low complete price. Free Edition does not require a paid contractor product for the baseline forms: its official supported-form list includes 1099-NEC, Schedule C and Schedule SE. The page’s title still refers to 2023, but its current body identifies 2025; the dated body, not that stale title, supports this comparison.
The Free and Premium product page establishes Free Edition’s $0 federal + $9.95 state + $0 required upgrade + $0 extra e-file = $9.95. Premium’s list calculation is $9.95 + $9.95 = $19.90. Its displayed $7.95 federal and $7.95 state discount totals $15.90, with no end date or code shown, and remains a secondary advertised figure. Free Edition still costs less at list price.
Watch before filing. State-only e-file is generally unavailable except New York; normally send state and federal together or follow the mail route. A user moving only a state return after filing federal elsewhere cannot assume the same workflow. Free Edition offers email and a knowledge base. Premium adds phone/live chat and advertised audit support, not a verified full-representation engagement. Neither plan provides a personally engaged named CPA or EA for your prop agreement.
OLT’s amendment policy allows free federal/state amendments when the original was filed with OLT, not when the original came from another provider. It describes eligible federal 2023, 2024 and 2025 e-file amendments and a separate state/year table. Its support and form-access page allows viewing/printing returns. Three-year form access is not a blanket data-erasure deadline; the privacy policy retains legal and service exceptions. Optional refund transfer adds $29.95 and is outside the direct-payment total.
Choose OLT when classification is already settled, you can enter business income and expenses yourself, and its specific state/year workflow matches your return. Do not spend less on preparation by leaving an uncertain contract unexplained.
Customer reviews. Trustpilot showed 3.1/5 from 35 reviews on October 8, 2026. The small sample includes praise for straightforward filing and affordability. Complaints include state calculations, deduction entry and eligibility friction. These describe the company, not verified results for this plan or prop agreement.
Official video check. No suitable provider-owned YouTube video was verified. A branded OLT channel was found, but its ownership link could not be established; it is not embedded as official guidance.
TaxSlayer tax software for baseline forms with phone help
The Self-Employed label is not the entry price for every contractor using TaxSlayer. Classic already supports the baseline forms. Its supported federal forms and filing-fee help article support 1099-NEC, Schedule C, Schedule SE, federal e-file and one state without a mandatory self-employment upgrade. That distinction prevents optional advice from being mistaken for compulsory form access.
Classic’s list arithmetic is $44.99 federal + $47.99 state = $92.98. Premium is $64.99 + $47.99 = $112.98, and Self-Employed is $74.99 + $47.99 = $122.98. Premium’s extra $20 buys priority/live-chat and tax-pro access; Self-Employed’s extra $30 buys contractor-specialist guidance. These are alternative support purchases, not evidence that Classic lacks Schedule C. No current promo or code was established for these named products.
Watch before filing. Standard phone/email support is technical help, not an individually verified specialist preparer. Fees can change at print/e-file; recheck the selected plan before paying. Extra states are $47.99 each. The fee schedule lists a $42 amendment charge covering federal and state; current federal amendments can e-file when supported, while state and prior-year amendments are mailed. The separately advertised $29.99 prior-year return with one state is generally a print/mail route, not today’s complete e-file comparison.
The licence terms and privacy policy describe PDF viewing/printing, versions generally available for three years and tax-return information retained for at least three tax years for legal duties. Download a copy before software access expires. Optional Tax Protection Plus audit defense has a separate scope and an unverified current fee; it is not silently included in Classic.
Choose Classic when you want standard human technical contact and can make the tax decisions yourself. Buy a higher support plan only for a service you will actually use.
Customer reviews. Trustpilot showed 4.2/5 from 31,408 reviews on October 8, 2026. Reviews often praise efficient filing and previous-year carryover. Complaints concern unexpected costs and confusing sections. These describe the company, not verified results for this plan or prop agreement.
Official video check. The owned self-employment introduction is from February 13, 2018 and contains obsolete prices. No current prop-filing tutorial was verified, so that historical price video is not embedded.
TurboTax desktop tax software for local return files
Desktop Deluxe is a different product from TurboTax Online Deluxe and the online free/simple-return offer. The Desktop Deluxe product and form list verifies the full baseline forms, including Schedule C and SE. A familiar online product name should not be used to decide whether desktop business forms require an upgrade.
For tax year 2025, Desktop Deluxe is $80 for the licence and included one-state preparation, plus $25 state e-file, or $105 complete. Desktop Premier is $115 + $25 = $140; Home & Business is $130 + $25 = $155. The cheapest qualifying documented desktop route is Deluxe. Five federal e-files are a licence limit, not permission to divide $80 by five when pricing one buyer’s return. New York/Washington e-file exceptions can change a specific state bill; this ranking uses the standard fee-paying state.
The online DIY Premium page shows $139 federal and the Expert Assist Premium page shows $209 federal, but their additional state prices were not established in the current accessible pages. Their complete totals remain unknown. A generic Basic route did not establish a separately priced Basic plan either. File-by-March-31 messages do not establish an unconditional October discount. Announced 2026 Desktop Deluxe pricing of $84 is a different tax year, not a correction to the reviewed 2025 $80 licence.
Watch before filing. Install/activation and e-file require a compatible computer, internet and an Intuit account. The desktop licence limits federal e-files and allows at most three state e-files per federal return. Keep local return-data and PDF backups; local files do not mean that activation or transmission never communicates with the provider. A current, complete extra-state 2025 charge was not verified and is not inferred from a 2026 price table.
The online terms describe individual amendments and prior-year desktop fallback at no additional cost; a separate Desktop amendment fee was not verified. Audit Q&A/guidance is not representation, and Audit Defense costs extra. A conflicting 2026 defense-fee table cannot establish a 2025 fee. Intuit’s privacy policy allows legal/business retention exceptions to deletion requests. Optional online refund processing adds $40 outside the baseline.
Choose Desktop Deluxe when you prefer local files and the verified desktop forms fit. Expert Assist adds a review service, not a matched specialist-accountant engagement for an ambiguous prop contract.
Customer reviews. Trustpilot showed 1.2/5 from 1,321 reviews on October 8, 2026. The visible sample did not establish a strong recurring positive theme; one long-term user described earlier satisfaction. Recurring concerns include upgrades, imports, technical problems and difficult support. These describe the company, not verified results for this plan or prop agreement.
Vendor-produced video. Self-employment expenses – TurboTax Support Video, uploaded December 2, 2025. An expense-entry walkthrough for general self-employment, not the Desktop Deluxe plan or a particular prop agreement. Some deduction wording is broad; IRS rules, not this video, determine deductibility.
TaxAct online tax software for a guided contractor return
The full Schedule C column matters more than an investor-friendly label at TaxAct. Its product-specific form matrix puts full Schedule C in the Self-Employed/Sole Proprietor columns, not the lower Deluxe/Premier columns. Its contractor help also supports 1099-NEC entry and the C/SE workflow. That is why the named online Self-Employed plan is compared here.
Self-Employed Online costs $109.99 federal + $64.99 state = $174.98, with no additional mandatory baseline filing charge. Self-Employed Download advertises a $164.99 starting price and one state, but detailed Schedule SE and the mandatory state e-file charge remain unresolved. It is not a verified $204.98 complete route and cannot be declared cheaper or more expensive than Online. An earlier $55 new-customer offer required filing by May 1. When we rechecked the official product pages on October 9, 2026, that banner was not displayed. The earlier offer does not establish a current October offer.
Watch before filing. The optional $45 Xpert Assist service is distinct from ordinary technical/customer care; its broad return review excludes source documents. It cannot replace a professional reading the agreement that determines payout character. Extra online states are $64.99 each. A named CPA/EA engagement was not verified.
The amendment help describes free amendment creation for an original TaxAct return, with possible charges for newly added forms and upgrades from Free. Current and the prior two years can e-file where supported. The printing help explains PDF copies; desktop users need local backups because the provider does not retain filed desktop copies. Seven-year online access is an access offer, not a universal deletion rule in the privacy policy. Optional Tax Protection Plus Audit Defense has exclusions and no verified current fee in the reviewed pages; it is not insurance or a promised result.
Choose Online Self-Employed when you want that guided contractor route and accept its complete price. A download sticker and included state preparation are not enough to substitute a different plan in the cost list.
Customer reviews. Trustpilot showed 4.0/5 from 8,398 reviews on October 8, 2026. Reviews praise guided filing and document importing. Complaints mention upsells, higher fees and correction confusion. These describe the company, not verified results for this plan or prop agreement.
Vendor-produced video. Small Business Taxes | Tax Me Anything, uploaded January 16, 2026. A small-business explainer addressing Schedule C and legal structure versus tax classification, not an individual prop contract or a guaranteed deduction.
Also-checked tax software with unresolved filing requirements
These providers are not disqualified as businesses. They are outside the priced ranking because an essential requirement is unresolved. A plausible price or familiar name does not fill that gap. Confirm the exact tax year and state at checkout before choosing either.
FreeTaxUSA tax software with state-year availability to confirm
FreeTaxUSA’s self-employed page supports 1099-NEC input, and its supported-form list includes Schedule C and Schedule SE. Its advertised $0 federal + $15.99 one-state cost is $15.99. Optional Deluxe adds $7.99, producing $23.98; Pro Support adds $64.99, producing $80.98. These are tax-year-2025 prices, not an announced 2026 price. No current promo code was verified.
Why it is not ranked. The start pages identify tax year 2025 while the state-availability page displays “Coming Soon” for listed states. We could not establish that those notices concern the same year rather than the upcoming cycle; the alternate state-help page could not be accessed. This does not mean every 2025 state is unavailable. The required state/year combination remains unresolved. Buying a support upgrade does not settle availability.
The self-employed page describes basic in-app/email help, Deluxe live chat and Pro calls/chats plus ProCheck. A named personally engaged CPA/EA was not verified. First-line AI replies were disclosed in a company review response. Current-year unlimited amendments cost $16.98 separately or are included with Deluxe/Pro; prior-year amendments cost $17.97. Optional Audit Defense is $19.99 with a separate coverage scope, not guaranteed tax savings. Refund-funded payment adds $24.99 outside the baseline.
Limits and documents. The terms exclude Form 1040NR, foreign employment Form 2555 and customers/preparers living outside the United States when filing. Downloadable/printable PDFs and prior-year PDF import are supported, not a promised bulk transaction export. Deluxe advertises seven-year file storage, while the privacy policy allows retention for service/legal needs. Storage access is not a universal erasure deadline.
Worth rechecking when low price matters and the exact state/year is confirmed open. Do that before completing income entry.
Customer reviews. Trustpilot showed 2.7/5 from 196 reviews on October 8, 2026. Reviews praise low filing costs and an easy interface for some standard returns. Complaints describe payment declines, refund-funded fees, amendments and support friction. These describe the company, not verified results for this plan or prop agreement.
Official video check. No suitable owned video was verified in the documented searches; no third-party walkthrough is labelled official.
H&R Block tax software with an unresolved complete price
The Self-Employed supported-form page establishes the baseline forms, including full Schedule C expenses and Schedule SE. A lower Premium form list does not establish that expense scope, even where broad FAQs group the paid products together. Product-specific support matters more than general brand wording.
Why it is not ranked. Self-Employed Online’s required federal/state amounts remained blank after a fresh page check. The Premium Desktop page shows a $19.95 state e-file component, not the complete licence/federal/state price. Its federal licence, detailed forms and numerical tax year remain unresolved. Desktop includes one state program and lists $39.95 for an additional state program; part-year/nonresident Delaware, Hawaii and Vermont forms are excluded, and the e-file charge has a New York exception. No $0 or guessed complete price belongs in the ranking.
Self-Employed Online includes unlimited live tax-pro questions and AI Tax Assist. Distinct Tax Pro Review is advertised with an unverified fee. No named personally engaged CPA/EA was matched. The amendment instructions describe accepted original 2025 online returns being amended/e-filed, with a Free-edition upgrade. A separate paid-plan amendment fee was not established; the provider-caused-error guarantee is not a blanket free amendment promise.
The privacy principles allow legal/regulatory/service retention and persistent backups, without a fixed universal deletion period. A successful current exact PDF-export help capture was not available, so confirm download access before committing. Audit Support Guarantee supplies response steps, not proven representation. Tax Notice Services/Peace of Mind have extra scope and unverified current charges.
Worth rechecking when its included live questions suit you and checkout supplies the complete named-plan bill. Ask separately about export, amendments and representation.
Customer reviews. Trustpilot showed 1.3/5 from 1,494 reviews on October 8, 2026. Some reviewers praise helpful and patient individual preparers. Complaints concern support delays, unexpected fees and upgrades; these company reviews cover offices as well as online filing. These describe the company, not verified results for this plan or prop agreement.
Vendor-produced video. What is Schedule C? | H&R Block®, uploaded November 1, 2024. A provider-owned Schedule C explainer uploaded November 1, 2024. It is not a current price source or analysis of a particular prop agreement.
