We checked 20 prop firms for the two things a trader who keeps failing needs to know: which rules besides the overall loss floor can end the next attempt, and what two failed attempts and a pass cost at list price per $1,000 of loss room at $50K. Only two products end an attempt on the floor alone: Topstep’s No Activation Fee Combine with the $1,000 daily limit ($127.50) and TradeDay’s Fast Pass End of Day ($252.67 on its stricter floor). Lucid’s LucidFlex ($163.00), Tradeify Growth ($167.50), Phidias Premium and The5ers Bootcamp add one rule. The cheapest third attempt is Blue Guardian 2 Step Nano at $76.20, with four rules that can end it. Nine of the 18 ranked products end an attempt on one bad day, all of them forex or CFD; ten price the next attempt as a new purchase; no firm publishes an unconditional free restart. Instant accounts cost more per $1,000 than their own firms’ evaluations; Tradeify Lightning leads that table at $738.00.

Best prop firms for traders who keep failing challenges: a calm trader at a desk in evening light looks at a chart before trying again

Freshness: rules, prices, retry routes and refund terms read on each firm’s own pages on October 7 and 8, 2026; the series checkpoint is October 2, 2026, and euro prices convert at that day’s ECB rate. Each Trustpilot figure carries the date we read it. Firms change reset prices and promotions without notice, so check the firm’s page before you buy.

Quick picks among prop firms for traders who keep failing challenges

  • Fewest ways to fail: Topstep Trading Combine 50K, No Activation Fee Path with the $1,000 daily limit, $85 a month. Only the $2,000 floor ends it ($127.50 per $1,000).
  • Cheapest third attempt: Blue Guardian 2 Step Nano $50K, $127 once ($76.20), if you can live with four rules that end it.
  • Best retry terms: FundedNext Stellar Lite 50K, unlimited resets at 10% off until funded ($160.99); Phidias’ $40 reset is the cheapest single retry.
  • Keeps your progress: Goat Funded Trader 2 Step GOAT $50K, where a Phase 2 reset keeps your Phase 1 pass, once per phase ($180.49).
  • Best for futures: TradeDay Fast Pass End of Day 50K for one rule and no daily limit; Lucid LucidFlex 50K for the cheapest one-time futures attempt ($163.00).
  • Best for forex and CFD: FundingPips 1 Step Flex $50K with 12% static room ($123.74), or The5ers Bootcamp for a $22 entry with no daily limit in the steps.
  • Skip the challenge: Tradeify Lightning Funded 50K, one rule besides the floor ($738.00 over three purchases).

A note on fairness: the cheapest product per dollar is not the one with the fewest ways to fail, and a firm can rank well on one test and badly on the other. Every firm here, including the ones with the most reviews, is put through the same two tests, and no firm is held back or promoted for any other reason.

Best prop firms for traders who keep failing, ranked by rules and third-attempt cost

Read the table by group first, then by price. A product in Group A can only be ended by its overall loss floor; Group B adds one more rule; Group C two or more. Inside each group, the cheaper three-attempt cost per $1,000 of loss room ranks higher. Futures and forex or CFD products share the table, and the market is in each first cell.

Notes on this ranking: † TradeDay’s Fast Pass page gives the live account’s floor as $2,000 in one place and $1,500 in its worked example; we divide by the stricter $1,500. On $2,000 the figure would be $189.50, still second in Group A. * The firm publishes no activation fee line, or no reset price, so that fee is left out rather than assumed to be $0 (MyFundedFutures and Bulenox Momentum are priced on a new account because no reset price is published). If a fee exists, the true figure is higher. ‡ FTMO prices in euros; €319 is converted at the ECB rate of 1.1225 on October 2, 2026. § The5ers sells no $50K Bootcamp; $20K is the nearest size, and its first step’s 5% floor is $250, which is why its figure is the highest in Group B. Bootcamp $100K works out to $392.00. ¶ A firm page words the consequence loosely (“may”, “could”, “reserve the right”) or two firm pages disagree; we count the rule as ending the attempt, the stricter reading. Read the other way, Tradeify would move to Group A and FTMO and MyFundedFutures to Group B, while Blue Guardian, FundingPips, E8 Markets, Goat Funded Trader, Bulenox and FunderPro would keep two or more rules and stay in Group C. Monthly products count one month at list as the first attempt. Goat allows one reset per phase, so its figure counts one Phase 1 reset and a new account.

Hidden Trustpilot ratings
  1. Sources: each firm’s rules page, help centre, terms, product card and pricing data, read on October 7 and 8, 2026. A rule counts as published if a buyer can read it before paying, including in public terms.
  2. What counts as a rule that ends an attempt: any rule other than the overall loss floor whose breach fails, closes or deletes the evaluation. A daily loss limit counts when it fails you and not when it pauses the day; a deadline counts when missing it fails you; inactivity rules count; a consistency rule counts only if a breach fails you; a conduct rule counts when the firm says a breach closes the account. A rule the firm states without saying what happens on a breach counts too, marked.
  3. What never counts: minimum trading days (they delay a pass), rules that only void a trade, remove profit or reject an order, general lists of banned conduct every firm carries, and rules that apply only after you are funded.
  4. The fixed scenario: your first two attempts fail on the first day and the third passes. All three happen in the first billing month, so no extra renewal is added.
  5. Order: group first, then the lowest third-attempt cost per $1,000, then the cheaper retry, then the cheaper list price. One evaluation per firm, its best product by those rules; instant accounts get their own table.

Third-attempt cost per $1,000 of loss room = (first attempt at list price + two next attempts on the cheapest route open to every failed buyer + any activation fee to reach funded, once) ÷ the overall maximum-loss floor at its smallest stage × 1,000

The floor rule in plain words: we divide by the overall maximum loss the firm allows, in dollars, at whichever stage is smaller, evaluation or funded. Never by a daily limit, a per-trade loss rule or a minimum balance. Worked example, Topstep: $85 for the first month plus two new $85 Combines is $255, against a $2,000 floor, so $127.50 per $1,000. List prices set the rank; codes appear in each firm block with their end dates. A fee the firm does not publish, such as an activation fee, is left out and marked, never assumed to be $0.

Two things we show but never use in the number. A fee refund after a payout is not netted in, because it depends on a payout that has not happened yet. A free restart with a condition, such as one that needs a renewal charge, a promo code or a paid add-on, is shown in each firm’s “what a fail leaves you” line, while the metric uses the route every failed buyer can take. Our beginners guide prices three attempts as three new purchases at list; this guide uses each firm’s own retry route, so the two sets of figures differ by design. Full method: how we rank.

Why prop firm challenges end and the rules behind most failed attempts

Every attempt here can end on the overall loss floor. What separates the products is the list of other ways to fail. Built from the rules the 18 ranked products publish, here is each type, who has it, and the question to ask before you buy:

  • The overall floor, and its shape: all 18. The futures products trail the end-of-day balance (Topstep, TradeDay, Lucid, Tradeify, Phidias, Bulenox, MyFundedFutures, Apex); most forex products use a static floor (FundingPips 12%, Blue Guardian, E8 Pro, Goat, FunderPro, Fintokei and Alpha Swing 10%, FundedNext 8%); FTMO’s trails the end-of-day balance. Ask: does the floor move up with my best day, and does it ever stop moving?
  • A daily loss that ends the attempt: nine ranked products, all forex or CFD: Blue Guardian 3%, FundingPips 2% on the option ranked here, E8 Pro 2.5%, FundedNext 4%, Goat 4%, FunderPro 5%, Fintokei 5%, Alpha Swing 5% and FTMO 3%. Ask: is the daily limit a pause or a fail, and is it measured on equity with open trades?
  • Inactivity: thirteen of the 18, the most common rule after the floor. MyFundedFutures closes after seven calendar days without a trade, Tradeify after a Monday-to-Friday week, E8 after 60 days, and most of the rest after 30. Ask: if I take a break after a bad week, how long before the account is gone?
  • A deadline: two. Bulenox Momentum and Apex give 30 days, and neither extends with a reset. Ask: does a retry restart the clock?
  • Conduct rules that close the account: deliberate news trading at FundingPips; holding through the close at Apex; weekend holds without an add-on at FunderPro; margin above 80% at Blue Guardian and Goat; very short holds at Blue Guardian, E8 and Alpha; mixed-contract size at MyFundedFutures. Phidias and Bulenox state contract or overnight limits without saying what a breach does. Ask: what does the firm say happens on a breach, in its own words?
  • Rules that only look dangerous: Topstep’s and TradeDay’s consistency rules raise the target, FTMO’s Best Day rule makes you trade on, FundedNext’s Quick Strike pauses progress in the Challenge, and Topstep, Tradeify and MyFundedFutures reject a single over-size order rather than failing you.

Topstep publishes the clearest numbers on how attempts end: “Over 63% of traders have lost an account in a single day.” That is a firm’s claim about its own traders, not a figure we can check, but it explains why a daily limit that pauses the day is worth more to a repeat failer than a cheaper price. For trading approaches matched to each rule, see our strategies for passing prop firm challenges; on static floors, our static drawdown guide.

What a failed prop firm challenge costs you next time

Prop firm challenge failed twice then passed: three attempt cards, the first two crossed out and the third ticked, each with a stack of coins
Two failed attempts and a pass: the cost this guide puts on every product.

Firms sell the next attempt in five ways, and the label rarely tells you the price:

  • Paid reset: a fixed fee to restart the same account. Phidias charges $40, TradeDay, Lucid and Tradeify $95. Topstep’s No Activation Fee reset is $95 too, which is why a new $85 Combine is the cheaper route there.
  • Discounted reset or restart: a percentage off the original price. FundingPips takes 12% off ($236.72, within 7 days), E8 10% ($224.10, within 7 days), FundedNext 10% ($206.99, no window) and Goat 7% ($286.44, once per phase, within 14 days).
  • Restore at renewal: TradeDay and Phidias restore a failed evaluation when the next monthly charge lands, and Topstep adds a Reset Credit with each rebill. It costs that month’s fee, so we never price it at $0.
  • New purchase at list: ten of the 18 ranked products, because the firm sells no reset (The5ers, Blue Guardian, FunderPro, Fintokei, Alpha Capital Group, FTMO, Apex), does not publish its price (Bulenox Momentum, MyFundedFutures), or charges more for the reset than a new account (Topstep).
  • Free with a condition: promotions, giveaways and paid add-ons, covered in the next section.

The spread is wide. One more attempt costs $16.00 per $1,000 of room at Phidias and $295.00 at Apex, where every failed or expired evaluation is a new $590 purchase. The table below sorts the ranked products by that single next attempt:

Two habits change the arithmetic in your favour. First, compare a reset with the price of a new account today, code included: E8’s public code takes 30% off a first order, so a coded new account can cost less than its 10% retry. Second, watch the calendar on monthly products: TradeDay’s resets never move the billing date, so a reset late in the month is followed by the full $189 renewal a few days later.

Free restarts and free retries for traders who fail prop firm challenges

No firm in this guide offers a free next attempt to every trader who fails. Every free route we found has a condition, and we list each one with the firm’s own wording:

  • TradeDay, at renewal: “Or, you can wait until your monthly membership fee renews, and we will reset you for free.” Only if the account already shows as failed when the payment lands, and the reset is not banked. The renewal is a $189 charge.
  • Phidias, at renewal: “Purchase a reset or wait 30 days for automatic reset” on the monthly plan. The wait costs the next monthly fee.
  • Topstep, at each rebill: “Every monthly Rebill adds 1 Reset Credit to your Reset Bank.” The credit comes with a charge you pay. Topstep also says “Topstep sometimes offers free Resets on TopstepTV and through the newsletter.”
  • Tradeify, by giveaway: “Q: Can I get a free reset? A: Free resets are only available through TradeifyTV giveaways.”
  • Fintokei, by promotion: its free-restart page offers one restart from Phase 1 on StartTrader, with code EXTRALIFE, and “the StartTrader +1UP promo offer is limited to one use per customer.” It covers StartTrader in USD, EUR or CZK only, not the ProTrader ranked here, and says it runs until June 30 with no year shown; that date had passed in 2026 while the page stayed live when we read it.
  • FunderPro, by paid add-on: “If your Classic Challenge is failed before you receive a performance reward, you will receive a second chance”, a new Classic account. It is bought with the challenge, once, and FunderPro does not say how the add-on is priced, so we print no figure for it.
  • Take Profit Trader and Earn2Trade: a disabled Take Profit Trader Test is restored at the monthly renewal, and Earn2Trade’s Trader Career Path banks a free reset at each rebill from the second month. Both firms are in the cautionary block.
  • E8 Markets’ old free reset: available only to buyers who used the GIBBS code before April 20, 2026; closed to everyone else.

Why promotions are not standing terms: a promo can end without notice, can carry a date with no year, and is usually limited to one use. We show each one with its condition and date, and rank every firm on the route it publishes for everyone.

Prop firm fee refunds when you fail and when you finally pass

A refund on a later payout is the closest thing to getting a failed fee back, and it only applies to the account you finally pass on, never to the ones you failed. Four of the 18 ranked products return the fee after a payout; most never do:

Evaluation fee refunds after a pass, never netted into the cost per $1,000.
