Read the full summary

We read the age clause, the ID rules and the someone-else’s-account clause of 18 prop firms on their own terms and help pages. The prop firm age requirement is at least 18 everywhere we looked: no prop firm we checked accepts under-18 buyers, offers a guardian or custodial account, publishes a student discount or says it accepts a student ID. Seven firms set a flat 18; the other eleven say 18 or your local legal age, whichever is higher, which can shut out an 18-year-old in Alabama, Nebraska or Mississippi. Among firms that let every 18-year-old in, Alpha Capital Group’s Alpha Pro 10% 50K is cheapest at $53.40 per $1,000 of loss room; if you meet your local age of majority, Topstep ($47.50 for one month) and E8 Markets ($49.80) cost least. The cheapest way in at any size is The5ers’ $2,500 account for $19, and three firms take cards only.

Freshness: age clauses, ID rules and payment pages read October 7 to 8, 2026; prices come from reads between October 5 and 7, 2026, and each Trustpilot figure carries its own date. Firms change terms without notice, so re-read the clause before you buy.

Quick picks among prop firms for students

  • Cheapest for an 18-year-old anywhere it sells: Alpha Capital Group Alpha Pro 10% 50K, $53.40 per $1,000, On-Demand price. A flat 18 rule and a static $5,000 floor.
  • Cheapest futures on our measure: Topstep Trading Combine 50K, $47.50 per $1,000, monthly, if you meet your local minimum age. Apex Trader Funding is the only ranked futures firm with a flat 18 rule, at $359.50 per $1,000.
  • Cheapest forex on our measure: E8 Markets E8 Pro 50K, $49.80 per $1,000, with a static 10% floor. ID is checked before you trade.
  • Cheapest way in: The5ers High Stakes $2,500, $19 one-time on the New version.
  • Free route that can lead to a paid account: BrightFunded’s Free $1K Challenge, no card needed; the funded account it leads to has a trailing floor.
  • Widest card-free checkout: FundingPips (PayPal, Neteller, Skrill, Paysafe Card, crypto) for forex; FundedNext Futures (PayPal, Skrill, Binance Pay, crypto) for futures.

Why this guide reads the age clause first: page-one roundups for students list “beginner-friendly” firms by price and profit split, and none quotes a firm’s own age rule. The wording differs in a way that decides whether an 18-year-old can buy at all, so we group firms by it and rank by cost inside each group. If you already know you qualify and just want the cheapest way to learn, our guide to prop firms for beginners ranks on the cost of learning instead.

Take under-18s
  1. The age clause, word for word. We read each firm’s terms, privacy policy and help centre and noted the exact sentence, its clause number and its date.
  2. Three wording types. Group A says 18 with no reference to local law. Group B says 18 or a higher local legal age, age of majority or contract age. Group C publishes no age rule you can read before paying. Where two of a firm’s pages differ, the stricter wording decides.
  3. ID, documents and names. When the firm checks identity, which documents it takes, whether a student ID counts, and whose name must match.
  4. Someone else’s account. The clause on sharing or trading for others and the clause on false information, with the consequence the firm states.
  5. Cost per $1,000 of loss room inside each group: list price plus activation, divided by the smallest overall loss floor in dollars, at $50K. One product per firm, the cheapest on this measure that does not have a floor trailing open profit or a daily loss that ends a futures account.

Cost per $1,000 = (list price + activation fee) / smallest overall loss floor x 1,000

Worked example: E8 Markets’ E8 Pro 50K costs $249 and its static 10% floor is $5,000, so $249 / $5,000 x 1,000 = $49.80. Monthly products count one month and are marked. Where a firm publishes no activation fee we never assume zero; the figure is the fee alone and is marked fee-only. Euro prices convert at the ECB rate for October 2, 2026, 1.1225 dollars per euro. Promotions are shown with their code and end date but never set the rank. A discretionary move to a live account is the first watch-out, never a reason to drop a firm. Tradeify and every other firm faced the same tests. Firm pages were read October 7 to 8, 2026.

Notes on this ranking. Ranks 1 to 15 run through Group A and then Group B. The three firms shown last are listed by the same measure but not numbered. Each mark in the cost column means this:

  • Monthly (Topstep, TradeDay, Take Profit Trader, Earn2Trade): the figure is one month of fee. Each extra month adds the fee again, so two months of Topstep is $190, or $95.00 per $1,000, and two months of TradeDay is $378, or $189.00.
  • Fee-only (FundingPips, FundedNext, ThinkCapital): the firm publishes no activation fee, so the figure is the challenge fee alone. Any activation fee would raise it: each $50 adds $8.33 per $1,000 at FundingPips’ $6,000 floor and $12.50 at FundedNext’s and ThinkCapital’s $4,000 floors.
  • Euro price (FTMO, BrightFunded): the fee is charged in euros. FTMO’s €319 is $358.08 and BrightFunded’s €297 is $333.38 at 1.1225; the dollar figure moves with the exchange rate.
  • 8% floor (The5ers): its $50K table shows an 8% maximum loss, a program FAQ says 10%. We rank on the lower floor ($62.25); at 10% it would be $49.80, level with E8 Markets on cost, list price and floor.
  • On-Demand price (Alpha Capital Group): the $267 is the On-Demand payout schedule. The Bi-Weekly schedule is $297, or $59.40 per $1,000, which would still be first in Group A.

Read the two tables together. The cheapest firms on our measure, Topstep and E8 Markets, are both in Group B, so an 18-year-old whose local age of majority is higher may not qualify. Among firms that let every 18-year-old in, Alpha Capital Group costs $3.60 more per $1,000 than E8 Markets, and Apex Trader Funding is the only ranked futures option, at more than seven times Topstep’s figure.

How old do you have to be for a prop firm, the age requirement explained

Prop firm age rules for students: three doors labelled Age 18, Local legal age and Not stated, with an ID card in front
Three ways firms word their age rule. Group C, the third door, was empty in our check.

You have to be at least 18 at every prop firm we checked, and at eleven of them that is only the starting point. The age rule is about contracts: a challenge is a paid agreement, and FundedNext’s help centre says why firms set 18: “Legally, individuals under the age of 18 may not possess the capacity to enter into binding contracts, including trading agreements.” A 2014 House of Commons Library briefing puts the UK position the same way: “In general you need to be 18 years of age to enter into a contract” (House of Commons Library). Firms word the rule three ways.

  • 18, flat (Group A). The firm names 18 and says nothing about local law. FTMO’s version is typical: “you are a natural person at least eighteen (18) years of age”. Alpha Capital Group, BrightFunded, FXIFY and Apex Trader Funding word it this way, and so do ThinkCapital and Take Profit Trader, which are shown last for other reasons.
  • 18 or your local legal age (Group B). The firm names 18 and adds a higher local minimum, age of majority or contract age. E8 Markets: “or the legal age of majority in your jurisdiction”. Tradeify gives no number at all in its terms, only “the legal age of majority under applicable laws”. Topstep, FundingPips, FundedNext, The5ers, Lucid Trading, MyFundedFutures, FundedNext Futures, TradeDay and Earn2Trade are in this group.
  • Not stated (Group C). No age rule you can read before paying. No firm in this guide falls here: every one publishes an age line in its terms, privacy policy or help centre.

Group B matters most in the United States, because a few states end minority after 18. These are the states an official state source names:

US states where minority lasts past 18, from each state’s own statute or legislature site.
StateMinor untilStatute also says
Alabama19Minority ends at 19 (Code of Alabama 26-1-1)
Nebraska19An 18-year-old who is not a ward of the state may contract
Mississippi2118-year-olds may contract on property and for investing

Alabama’s code says a person “at the arrival at the age of 19 years, shall be relieved of his or her disabilities of minority” (Alabama Legislature). Nebraska’s statute says “All persons under nineteen years of age are declared to be minors”, while the same section lets a person “Eighteen years of age or older and who is not a ward of the state” enter a binding contract (Nebraska Legislature). Mississippi defines a minor as anyone “under twenty-one (21) years of age” for most purposes, but the same 2023 law gives 18-year-olds capacity “for the purpose of investing in mutual funds, stocks, bonds and any other publicly traded equities” (Mississippi Legislature); a 2026 bill to lower the general age to 18 is marked dead on the legislature’s bill page.

No Group B firm says how it reads those state rules for its own clause. If you are 18 in one of those three states, the safe step is to ask the firm in writing whether you qualify before you pay. Outside the US, some countries also set the age of majority above 18; we name only the places an official source in our check covers. Group A firms avoid the question, which is why we list them first.

Prop firms for under 18s, what is and is not possible

A person under 18 cannot buy, own or trade an account at any of the 18 firms in this guide. We found no under-18 route, no guardian route and no age exception on any free product. Several firms spell out what happens if someone under age gets in anyway:

  • BrightFunded reserves the right to end the agreement: “If any of these conditions are detected after an agreement has been concluded, we reserve the right to terminate it.”
  • FXIFY names its age clause in its penalty clause, so access in conflict with clause 1.3 lets it restrict or end access without compensation.
  • FTMO: if you do not meet clause 1, “the Agreement is not concluded”, and the fee is not refundable.
  • Apex Trader Funding may “suspend or restrict access to the Services until the individual reaches the age of majority”.
  • Alpha Capital Group: “If you are under 18 years of age, you may not use the Services.” Its privacy policy, which covers use of the website rather than the trading services, also says “By using the Website, you represent that you are at least 18 or that you are the parent or guardian of such a minor and consent to such minor dependent’s use of the Website.” That sentence is about the website; Terms 8.1 still bar under-18s from the Services, and the same privacy section says under-18 accounts are deactivated.

Free routes do not change this. Free trials, contests and courses at these firms either carry their own 18+ line (Tradeify’s competitions, MyFundedFutures’ club) or sit under the same terms as the paid product. This table shows each free route, what it needs and where it leads:

What is possible before 18 is learning and practice outside these firms. Read the rules in this guide until a daily loss limit and an end-of-day floor make sense, then practise on demo software whose own terms allow your age. Our guide to brokers to practise on for a prop firm challenge compares demo platforms, so check each provider’s age rule there before signing up. Once you reach the firm’s minimum, the free trials in our prop firms with free trials guide are the next step, and they cost nothing to try.

Using a parent’s name or a custodial account at a prop firm

Every firm in this guide requires the person who buys, verifies and trades the account to be the same adult, and a parent’s consent does not change the age rule. Topstep’s terms say an under-age user may not use the services “irrespective of whether your parent or guardian consents to your use of the Site or Services”, and TradeDay’s terms use the same words.

The third-party clauses close the other doors. Tradeify: “A family member or friend may not purchase an account for you or pay with their card, even with their permission.” MyFundedFutures ends an account bought with someone else’s card, and says so includes “a friend or family member’s card”. FundedNext Futures refuses a card used by another trader “regardless of family or personal relationships”. FundedNext treats “Using another individual’s information, such as an email address or identification details, during registration or KYC verification” as a serious violation. The stated consequences are termination of all linked accounts, forfeited rewards and no refund, so an account in a parent’s name for a student under 18 is an account the firm can close and keep the fee for.

Custodial accounts exist, but not at prop firms. FINRA describes the UGMA and UTMA custodial accounts used for minors this way: “a parent, grandparent or other adult is custodian for the account and makes all the investment decisions until the account beneficiary reaches the age of majority” (FINRA). Those are brokerage and savings accounts in which the adult decides. No firm in this guide offers a custodial, guardian or joint account, and every one bars anyone but the named holder from trading.

ID checks students should expect at prop firms

Every firm checks identity before it pays you, and most check before your funded account starts. The stage varies more than students expect: E8 Markets checks before you get login details, Apex Trader Funding and Take Profit Trader at registration, Topstep before a second purchase, and most others after you pass. Plan for a government-issued photo ID in your own name. Six firms list only government documents or refuse student IDs outright, and none of the 18 says a student ID is enough.

When each firm checks ID, which documents it names, and its student ID, address and name rules.
