Best Prop Firm Account Size to Start With, Priced Size by Size

The best prop firm account size to start with depends on the product: we priced 17 firms at every size they sell, per $1,000 of loss room, and found the cheapest size is often $50K or $100K.

We priced one product at every account size it sells for 17 prop firms, plus one caution, checked October 4, 2026, and computed the cost per $1,000 of loss room at each size: (list price + activation fee) / max loss floor x 1,000. The best prop firm account size to start with is a property of each product, and it is often not the biggest: 13 of 17 ladders are cheapest below their top size. Cheapest sizes: $25K for 1 (FundedNext Futures); $50K for 7 (Topstep, E8 Markets, Tradeify, Lucid Trading, My Funded Futures, Phidias Propfirm and Apex Trader Funding); $100K for 6 (FundingPips, Alpha Capital Group, Goat Funded Trader, The5ers, FTMO and Hola Prime); $200K for 3 (Blue Guardian, FundedNext and FXIFY). Lowest rates: Blue Guardian 2 Step Nano $23.00 at $200K, FundingPips 1 Step Flex $44.08 at $100K, Alpha Capital Group Alpha Pro 10% $44.70 at $100K, Topstep Trading Combine $47.50 at $50K (its smallest size). Starting at the smallest size costs up to 2.25x more per $1,000 (FXIFY at $5K), while FundedNext Futures Legacy costs $79.99 at $25K and $80.00 at $100K. Futures floors shrink from about 4% of size at $25K to 3% to 3.5% at $100K, so a 1% stop is a quarter to a third of the room, against a tenth on most forex products. Take Profit Trader is shown, not ranked: its PRO floor trails open profit.

Quick answer on the best prop firm account size to start with

The cheapest account size is different for every product, so the answer starts with the product, not the number. For each of 17 firms we took one product sold at several sizes, which we call its ladder, and worked out what each size costs per $1,000 of loss room. 13 of the 17 are cheapest somewhere below their biggest card, and 3 (Topstep, FundedNext Futures and Phidias Propfirm) are cheapest at their smallest.

  • Cheapest loss room at any size: Blue Guardian 2 Step Nano, $23.00 per $1,000 at $200K and $26.66 at $25K, so starting small barely costs more.
  • Best $5K to $10K start: Alpha Capital Group Alpha Pro 10% at $5K ($66.00), FundingPips 2 Step Flex at $10K ($58.33), or Hola Prime 2-Step Prime at $10K ($69.00).
  • Best $25K start: Blue Guardian 2 Step Nano ($26.66); in futures, FundedNext Futures Legacy ($79.99), no premium over its $100K.
  • Best $50K start: Topstep Trading Combine ($47.50), cheapest at its smallest size; E8 Pro ($49.80) is also cheapest at $50K.
  • Best $100K start: FundingPips 1 Step Flex ($44.08) and Alpha Capital Group Alpha Pro 10% ($44.70).
  • Size to skip: Apex Trader Funding’s $150K ($587.25) costs nearly as much per $1,000 as its $25K; FTMO’s $25K ($89.35) is dearer than its $10K.

How account size changes what you pay per $1,000 of loss room

Best prop firm account size concept: five price tags of increasing size on a shelf with a Best value marker over the middle tag
The best value is usually a middle size: price tags grow with the account, but not in step with the loss room they buy.

A prop firm challenge fee buys one thing you can measure: the dollars you are allowed to lose before the account ends. That is the max loss floor. Dividing the price by the floor gives a rate that can be compared across sizes and firms:

Cost per $1,000 of loss room = (list price + activation fee) / (max loss floor in dollars / 1,000)

Fees do not grow in step with account size, so the rate moves as you go up the ladder. Hola Prime’s 2-Step Prime shows every pattern in one product:

  • $5K: $39 for $500 of room = $78.00 per $1,000
  • $10K: $69 for $1,000 of room = $69.00 per $1,000
  • $25K: $179 for $2,500 of room = $71.60 per $1,000
  • $50K: $319 for $5,000 of room = $63.80 per $1,000
  • $100K: $569 for $10,000 of room = $56.90 per $1,000
  • $200K: $1,079 for $16,000 of room = $67.44 per $1,000

Three things stand out. The $5,000 card is the most expensive way to buy loss room ($78.00), 1.37x the $56.90 rate at $100,000. The $10,000 card ($69.00) is cheaper than the $25,000 ($71.60), so the line is not smooth. And the biggest card, $200,000, costs more per $1,000 ($67.44) because its floor drops from 10% to 8%. A buyer who assumed bigger is always better value would pay 19% more per $1,000 than at $100,000.

The same rate also tells you how much a single trade can hurt. On a 10% floor a stop of 1% of the account uses a tenth of the room; on a futures account with a 4% floor the same stop uses a quarter of it. Both numbers sit beside every size in the tables below.

Hidden Trustpilot ratings
  1. One product per firm: each firm’s products were priced at every size they sell, and the product with the lowest rate at its best size became the firm’s ladder. The others are named in its block where they win at a particular size.
  2. List price only: the rate uses the regular list price plus any activation fee due after passing. Codes and limited-time offers are shown in each block with their end date, or “no end date shown”, and never set a rank.
  3. The overall floor: the denominator is the overall max loss floor in dollars at the strictest stage, never a daily loss limit, a per-trade rule or a minimum balance.
  4. Unknowns stay unknown: where a firm publishes no activation fee and does not say there is none, the rate covers the challenge price only and is marked. Euro prices are converted at the ECB rate of 1.1225 dated October 2, 2026.
  5. Eligibility: a ladder ranks when the product is on sale today at two or more sizes with a published price and floor at each, and no rule ends the account on open profit. A firm’s live call-up is named as a warning, never a ranking reason.

Prop firm account size ladders ranked by their cheapest size

Each row is one product. The rank uses the ladder low, the cheapest rate the product reaches at any size. The small-size premium shows how much more each $1,000 of loss room costs if you start at the smallest card instead.

Notes on this ranking: Each rate uses list price plus any activation fee over the overall max loss floor; no two ladder lows tie. * The firm publishes no activation fee and does not say there is none, so the figure covers the challenge price only; any activation fee would raise it. † One month of a monthly price. If the evaluation takes two months, Topstep’s $50K becomes $95.00 and Phidias Propfirm’s $50K $190.80 per $1,000. ‡ FTMO prices in euros, converted at the ECB rate of 1.1225 dated October 2, 2026. A euro about 1.6% stronger would put FTMO behind Hola Prime; it would need to be 6.4% weaker to pass FXIFY. § Conservative reading. The5ers’ size table sets an 8% max loss at $50K and $100K while its FAQ says 10%; on 10% its $100K would be $40.50 and rank second. Lucid Trading’s Flex prices are the store base plus the no daily loss limit add-on; on the base alone its $50K is $68.00, ahead of Tradeify. Futures rows trail end of day, and FXIFY’s floor trails the closed balance until it locks; the forex rows otherwise use static floors.

The same ladders at the sizes most firms sell. Every one of the 17 sells a $50,000 card, the only size they all share, which is why most size comparisons start there. The cheapest $50,000 here is Blue Guardian’s ($25.40) and the dearest Apex Trader Funding’s ($359.50).

  • $5K: 8 ladders sell it, all forex. The cheapest is Alpha Capital Group at $66.00, but the median product charges 58% more per $1,000 here than at its own best size. Buy $5K for the low ticket, not the value.
  • $10K: 9 ladders; median $74.99. Hola Prime ($69.00) and The5ers ($69.00) are cheaper here than at $25K, and Alpha Capital Group is at its worst.
  • $25K: 15 ladders, and the first size with futures. Blue Guardian is far ahead ($26.66); among futures, FundedNext Futures Legacy ($79.99) carries no premium over its $100K, while Apex Trader Funding’s $25K costs $599.00.
  • $50K: all 17 ladders; median $63.80. It is the cheapest size for 7 of them (Topstep, E8 Markets, Tradeify, Lucid Trading, My Funded Futures, Phidias Propfirm and Apex Trader Funding), and six of those are futures products.
  • $100K: 17 ladders; median $54.90, the lowest of any size, and the cheapest size for 6 (FundingPips, Alpha Capital Group, Goat Funded Trader, The5ers, FTMO and Hola Prime). Futures floors are 3% to 3.5% of size here, so a 1% stop is close to a third of the room.
  • $150K and up: 14 ladders; median $55.48. The rate stops falling for most products: only Blue Guardian, FundedNext and FXIFY are cheapest at $200K, and E8 Pro and FXIFY get dearer again at $400K.

When the best product changes with prop firm account size

Several firms sell different products at different sizes, or a product whose best setting changes with size. Ranking one ladder per firm hides these switches, so here they are in one place:

  • FundingPips: the 2 Step Flex is cheaper at $5K to $25K ($65.00, $58.33, $62.67 per $1,000); the 1 Step Flex on its 2% daily loss setting wins from $50K.
  • E8 Markets: the 8% drawdown setting is cheapest at $5K ($80.00); from $200K up the E8 One on its 14% setting beats E8 Pro ($51.32 at $200K).
  • Alpha Capital Group: Alpha Pro 8% beats Alpha Pro 10% at $10K ($71.25 against $77.00).
  • Blue Guardian: the 2 Step Nano starts at $25K; at $5K the 2 Step Standard ($80.00) and at $10K the 1 Step Nano ($64.43) are its cheapest.
  • FundedNext Futures: Legacy wins at $25K and $100K; Flex wins at $50K ($89.33) and is the only product at $150K ($121.00).
  • Phidias Propfirm: the Fundamental plan starts at $50K; the only $25K product is Express to Live at $342.00 per $1,000.
  • FXIFY: the Two Phase Classic matches the Standard’s rate to $100K and is not sold above it.
  • Size-only products: FTMO sells no $5K card, Topstep nothing under $50K, Goat Funded Trader’s 2 Step GOAT stops at $150K, and Hola Prime’s $200K card has a tighter 8% floor and 4% daily loss.

Futures vs forex account sizes, and why futures floors shrink

Forex and CFD products here set the floor as a fixed share of the account, usually 10% (8% at FundedNext, 12% at FundingPips), so the room grows in step with the size. Futures firms set the floor in dollars per size, and it grows more slowly than the account: Tradeify 4%, 4%, 3.5%, 3.33% from $25K to $150K; Apex Trader Funding 4%, 4%, 3%, 2.67% from $25K to $150K; Topstep 4%, 3%, 3% from $50K to $150K; Lucid Trading 4%, 4%, 3%, 3% from $25K to $150K.

That has two effects. First, a futures account gives far less room per dollar of account than a forex one, so the rate per $1,000 is usually higher: the cheapest futures ladder low is Topstep’s $47.50, against Blue Guardian’s $23.00 in forex. Second, the bigger the futures account, the smaller each loss can be relative to the room. That is why so many futures ladders are cheapest at $50K: above it, the price keeps rising while the floor rises more slowly. If you trade futures, our futures prop firms for beginners guide prices micros and data fees.

Risk per trade by prop firm account size, and how many losing trades fit

Trading pressure grows when one bad trade eats a large slice of the room. The “1% losses to floor” column in each firm’s table answers it directly: how many losing trades, each risking 1% of the account size, it takes to reach the floor from the start.

  • 12 losses: FundingPips 1 Step Flex, on its 12% floor, at every size.
  • 10 losses: most forex ladders on a 10% floor, at every size.
  • 8 losses: FundedNext Stellar Lite at every size, The5ers at $50K and $100K, and Hola Prime at $200K.
  • 4 losses: futures at $25K and $50K on a 4% floor (5 at Phidias Propfirm’s $50K).
  • 3 to 3.5 losses: futures at $100K and $150K; Apex Trader Funding’s $150K allows just 2.67.

So a futures trader who moves from $50,000 to $150,000 should cut the risk per trade, not keep it at 1% of the larger balance. Futures firms also cap the contracts you can hold by size; our maximum contracts per account size comparison lists them. Forex leverage limits by size and stage are in our highest leverage prop firms guide.

First payout caps by prop firm account size

A bigger account does not always mean a bigger first payout. Many firms cap each request in dollars, and the cap rises more slowly than the account size:

  • Apex Trader Funding: $1,000, $1,500, $2,000 and $2,500 per request from $25K to $150K, six payouts per funded account, so a $25K tops out at $6,000.
  • My Funded Futures Builder: $1,000, $2,000, $3,000 and $3,500 per cycle, so the $150K’s cap is only $500 above the $100K.
  • Tradeify Growth and Lucid Trading LucidFlex: $1,000 per request at $25K; LucidFlex caps never rise with later payouts.
  • Blue Guardian: 2% of the account per 14-day cycle, $500 at $25K before an 80% split and 3% fee.
  • Goat Funded Trader: the first two payouts are capped at 6% of size, and 4% ($200) at $5K.
  • No dollar cap published: FTMO, FundedNext, FundingPips, Hola Prime, FXIFY, Alpha Capital Group and E8 Markets, though E8 holds back half of profit and FTMO applies a 50% Best Day Rule.

Two consequences follow. A $25,000 futures account is usually capped at $1,000 a request whatever you make, so the small size limits income as well as room. And at firms with caps that rise slowly, the step from $100K to $150K buys more room but barely more payout.

Fixed fees weigh most at a small prop firm account size

Some costs are the same at every size, so they eat a bigger share of a small account’s price:

  • Platform add-ons: FundingPips charges $20 extra for cTrader, 38% on top of its $52 $5K card and under 4% on the $529 $100K. E8 Markets adds $10 for cTrader on cards under $100.
  • Activation fees: Apex Trader Funding’s $109 activation adds 22% to its $25K price, and Take Profit Trader’s $130 is 87% of its $150 monthly $25K fee.
  • Data: Tradeify’s Level 1 data is free with a signed non-professional agreement, otherwise $300 a month, three times its $25K price. Topstep includes Level 1 data, and Phidias Propfirm lists top-of-book CME data as free.
  • Payout minimums: Hola Prime’s 2.5% payout fee has a $25 minimum on Rise or bank transfer, so on a $200 payout it is 12.5%; Take Profit Trader charges $50 on wallet withdrawals of $250 or less.

Fees like these do not enter the ranking unless they are a list price or an activation fee, but they matter most when the account is small. Our cheapest prop firms list prices the full cost of getting funded.

Five prop firm account size mistakes, with the numbers

  1. Paying the small-size premium without noticing. FXIFY’s $5K costs 2.25x its best rate, FundingPips’ $5K 1.97x and E8 Pro’s $5K 1.93x. If the budget allows a $50K, the same money buys more room per dollar there.
  2. Assuming bigger is cheaper. 13 of 17 ladders are cheapest below their top size. Apex Trader Funding’s $150K ($587.25) nearly matches its $25K ($599.00), and FXIFY’s $400K ($73.75) costs more than its $100K ($54.90).
  3. Ignoring the per-request cap. A $25K futures account at Apex Trader Funding, Tradeify, Lucid Trading or My Funded Futures pays at most $1,000 a request. Size up if payout per request matters to you.
  4. Forgetting the activation fee. On a promotion the activation can outweigh the evaluation: Apex Trader Funding’s $50K at the SAVENOW price is $59, but the $129 activation still applies.
  5. Keeping the same stop as the account grows. A 1% stop is a tenth of a 10% forex floor but a quarter of a 4% futures floor at $50K and over a third of Apex Trader Funding’s $150K floor. Size the stop to the floor, not to the balance.

Every prop firm account size ladder, firm by firm

In ranking order. Each block shows the product at every size it sells, the sweet spot in bold, and the same fields: where to start, the small-size premium, the upgrade path, what to watch and the firm’s Trustpilot standing.

Blue Guardian 2 Step Nano has the cheapest loss room at every size it sells, from $25K up

No other ladder in this set comes close on price per dollar of loss room. The 2 Step Nano charges $66.66 for a $25,000 account with a $2,500 static floor, which is $26.66 per $1,000, and the rate keeps easing to $23.00 at $200,000 ($460 for $20,000 of room). Starting small costs only 1.16x the best rate, the flattest premium among the forex ladders here.

$200K$460$20,000 (10%)$23.00*10$4,000 gross per 14 days

The trade-off sits on the payout side. Each 14-day cycle pays at most 2% of the initial balance: $500 gross at $25,000 and $4,000 at $200,000, then an 80% split and a 3% processing fee, so the first $25K payout nets $388.00 at most. The 2 Step Nano is not sold below $25,000; at $5,000 the firm’s 2 Step Standard is its cheapest product ($80.00 per $1,000) and at $10,000 the 1 Step Nano is ($64.43). Checkout shows no activation line and the firm does not state that there is none, so these figures cover the challenge price only. The BG25 code took 25% off at checkout ($95.00 at $50,000), with no end date shown.
