What a no activation fee prop firm actually waives
An activation fee is a one-time charge to open the funded account after you pass. Firms name that account differently: Performance Account (PA) at Apex, Express Funded Account (XFA) at Topstep, PRO at Take Profit Trader, Master at Bulenox, Qualified at Alpha Futures, LiveSim at Earn2Trade. A $0 activation does not cover the evaluation price, monthly rebills, resets, data or payout fees. Definition: no activation fee, explained and our activation fee dictionary entry.
The appeal is psychological, not just arithmetic. A one-time evaluation fee is a sunk cost you pay once, before you know whether you will pass; a recurring fee is a bill you keep paying while the clock runs, which adds pressure to close out the evaluation fast rather than trade your plan. Topstep’s own marketing frames its Standard Path, the one with the $149 activation fee, as “best for traders confident they’ll pass in 1-2 attempts,” which is an admission that the $0 path exists for traders who expect to need more attempts, the traders who benefit most from removing the per-cycle bill. That framing cuts both ways: a trader who passes in one attempt pays more on the no-fee path (Topstep’s own numbers, worked above), so the psychological comfort of a one-time cost can carry a real-dollar cost if you are, in fact, a fast passer. The same logic applies to any firm selling two paths at two prices for the same target: the cheaper path on paper is not cheaper for every trader, only for the one who needs it.

Drawdown type changes how hard the account is to keep: a trailing drawdown chases your peak balance (intraday is the strictest, since it moves on open profit before you close a trade); an end-of-day drawdown only moves once at the close; a static drawdown never moves at all.
